Sources have told Jayhawk Slant that Kansas head coach David Beaty will hire Tony Hull to be the new running backs coach. Kansas fans are familiar with Hull who coaches at Warren Easton High in Louisiana. The Jayhawks signed quarterback Tyriek Starks this year from Warren Easton.

Beaty has recruited Warren Easton in the past and built a good relationship with Hull. This is the last hire Beaty will make to round out his staff before spring football starts.

Sources also told Jayhawk Slant Beaty interviewed several candidates for the opening before Hull emerged as the leader.

Hull has an interesting story on his path to the coaching profession. Before he took the head coaching job at Warren Easton he was an engineer at NASA. He decided to get back into coaching and left behind what some would consider a dream job and took a big pay-cut.

Warren Easton High didn’t even play high school football the year before Hull took the job due to Hurricane Katrina. Hull took over a tough situation but quickly turned Warren Easton into a powerhouse. In 2014 he led them to the state championship before losing to Neville 28-27. It was the first time Warren Easton played in the state title game in over 50 years.

This season Hull took them back to the state semi-finals before losing to Neville, the eventual state champs.

Beaty has made it clear he wants to recruit the state of Louisiana in the future. Hull will give the Jayhawks an immediate pipeline into New Orleans and surrounding areas.

Hull played college football at Louisiana-Lafayette where he was an offensive lineman. He is expected to join the staff in the next 24 hours and start preparing for spring football.
